Isabel Dias

IS-UP/U.Porto (Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto_Departamento de Sociologia)

She is a full professor in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP) and a researcher at the Institute of Sociology (IS-UP).

She has developed teaching-learning activities in various curricular units of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles of studies in the Department of Sociology at FLUP. She also teaches on the Doctorate in Occupational Health and Safety and the Doctoral Program in Digital Media, both at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).

Her research has focused on domestic and gender-based violence, ageing, elder abuse, women's work and occupational health. She is the author of several books, including the following: Violence in the Family. A Sociological Approach. Porto: Edições Afrontamento, which has two editions (2004; 2010); Domestic and Gender Violence: A multidisciplinary approach. Lisbon: Pactor (2018) (Coord.) She is also the author of several book chapters and scientific articles published in national and foreign journals. 

She has participated in and coordinated several national and international research projects. For example, she coordinated the project “HARMED - Socio-economic and health determinants of elder abuse” (2014-2020), “Cleaning in times of pandemic: between precariousness and health risks for cleaning service workers” (2022), both funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). She is currently the researcher in charge of the RESET project - “Redesigning Equality and Scientific Excellence Together”, funded by the European Commission's H2020 Program. She is also a member of the research teams of the projects IQUAL_CAMPUS - Sistema conjunto de formacion Trasnfronteriza em Igualdad de Genero Laboral (Programa de Cooperación Interreg España-Portugal (POCTEP) (2024-2026) and “Erasmus+60 Cooperation Partnerships in higher education” (KA2). 

She has given numerous lectures at national and international scientific congresses and has also carried out relevant scientific evaluation work for international journals, as well as for the FCT. In this context, she was the coordinator of the Sociology panel for awarding PhD Scholarships (2020, 2021 and 2022); Co-Coordinator of the Research Infrastructure Monitoring Committee of the National Roadmap, Social Sciences and Humanities domain (RNIE) (2019-2021); Evaluator of the Evaluation Committee for the Final Scientific Reports of IC&DT projects / Sociology area (2019-2023), member of the panel for awarding PhD Scholarships in a non-academic environment (2023 and 2024). She is also a member of the list of experts in the area of domestic and gender-based violence for the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality (CIG).

She is a member of the General Council of the University of Porto, Chair of the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto and Director of the Master's Degree in Sociology at the same Faculty. She was deputy director of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto between 2016 and 2019.
